About Me
Last spring I interned at Noozhawk, a newsroom in Santa Barbara, where I was lucky to stretch my reporting skills outside of the classroom—navigating the city, speaking with the community and diving into each story. I savored those months of standing in the shoes of a professional journalist, racing from one interview to the next with a notebook and camera in hand. I can't wait to do it again.
But it was back in 2022 during a communications internship for the International Center for Journalists in Washington D.C. that I realized my passion for journalism. An opportunity to write several freelance pieces for the organization's news-producing site IJNet unlocked a love for telling stories, and the truth.
So I hit the ground running and joined a student reporting program in Berlin, where I got hands-on practice interviewing people on the street, working with interpreters and learning from veteran journalists like Barbara Demick. My final product was an investigative piece on redeveloping the historical Tegel airport. I credit this trip with sparking my dreams of becoming a foreign correspondent.
Later in 2023 I was accepted into UC Santa Barbara’s professional writing program, which bolstered my journalistic expertise through a year-long intensive study of and training in the craft. Beyond text, my writing minor's coursework emphasized a growing need for interactive digital content, prompting me to build a website that now hosts my feature piece on a California oil rig attracting sea-life. This project fostered a growing interest in environmental journalism as a means for science communication.
I'm now studying Mandarin in Taipei, Taiwan. My time in Taipei has strengthened my Chinese reading, writing, and speaking, bringing me one step closer to a career in foreign correspondency. But I've stayed active in journalism, posting blogs and travel stories to keep my writing chops and reporting skills sharp. With my return to the United States this spring I'm hunting for jobs and internships that will fuel my success and propel me into the news and media industry.
